ABIT KT7 BIOS Tweaking

Introduction

The ABIT KT7 has become the most popular motherboard for Socket-A overclocking. With SoftMenu III, the board offers an extremely easy way to overclock socket A processors. But even though it is good for overclockers, performance compared to the ASUS A7V is not the best. In most tests, the ABIT is trailing the ASUS board. However, with some tweaking in the bios settings, the ABIT can perform rather well. The aim of this article is to find out what settings in the bios that improve performance.

This article is a bit crippled by the fact that I only have PC100 RAM in machine. If I had some high quality RAM in my machine, there are some further settings that would have improved performance. I will try to make a small summary at the end for those with high quality RAM (Cas Latency 2 PC133).

I have used Expendable for the main benchmarks. I could have used a lot of other benchmarks as well, but Expendable is very good to measure memory bandwidth and CPU speed. Unless noted, the settings from the previous benchmarks are used in later benchmarks. All tests done in 640x480x16, with sound turned off.

System used in benchmarks:

ABIT KT7 motherboard
Duron 650 @ 900 MHz (9x100MHz)
128 MB PC100 SDRAM
Voodoo3 2000
20 GB Western Digital HD
